Welding Supplies - What's New?

Plymouth Showroom Renovation

The Plymouth depot of Wellington Welding Supplies has been a major distributor for ESAB Group for many years, and over the last 10 years the emphasis on the leading ESAB brand has changed from Murex to ESAB, so much so that Murex has all but disappeared as a stand alone brand. There are no longer Murex arc welding machines or gas equipment and indeed the only products available under the Murex banner is a limited range of consumables. To reflect this fundamental shift in corporate strategy, it was necessary for the Plymouth showroom to undergo its own re-branding and, in early July, the Plymouth depot took delivery of its new ESAB merchandising units. These replaced the somewhat dated Murex units and gave Plymouth a new contemporary look complementing the clean modern ESAB branding.

Commenting on the new look, Plymouth Branch Manager John Pulling said: “Murex has been an integral part of Wellington Welding’s support for the Esab Group for many years but the shift away from Murex as a brand has resulted in customers now identifying more with ESAB, and frankly our showroom needed to reflect this. We were to put it mildly due an upgrade but I am delighted with the result and, judging by the compliments we have received, so are the customers.”

Local Customer welcomes new Kemppi squad

We are pleased to confirm an order for 12 Kemppi Master S400 MMA Sets about to be delivered to one of our customers.

Confirmation that investment in the UK Welding Industry is continuing apace.

More & More Local Investment

Plymouth Branch Manager John Pulling personally oversees the delivery of 20 Fronius TransSteel 2200 to a new home with a Devonport based company, providing further evidence that the UK welding industry is alive and thriving and prepared to invest in new technology.

The Fronius TransSteel 2200 is a true multi-process machine capable of delivering MIG, TIG and MMA capability from a 240v supply.

Many competitive machines were tested before final approval given to purchase the Fronius TransSteel 2200 which backs our view that it is one of the best welding machines we have tested.

If you would like a free no obligation weld test then please contact us.

Continuous Local Investment

Not the biggest order we have ever had but a good example of a Devonport contractor and a Cornish manufacturer of agricultural equipment continuing to invest in new equipment, which shows the diversity and strength of the British economy.

We will endeavour to show more examples of successful companies investing in state of the art welding equipment as the year progresses.

Sometimes I don’t think we recognise the diversity of manufacturing taking place in the UK and the forward looking thinking of the people involved with these companies.

New HSE Guidelines

As you may have read, the Health and Safety Executive has recently issued a Safety Bulletin for Mild Steel welding, and it has now been reclassified as a known carcinogen.

Our understanding of the current requirements are as follows:

  • As part of the customers risk assessments the Hierarchy of Control should be followed.
  • Suitable engineering controls, such as Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV), should be provided for all welding activities indoors, regardless of their duration or frequency.
  • Existing control measures should be risk assessed to ensure compliance with the new HSE recommendations.
  • Where LEV does not adequately control exposure, it should be supplemented by respiratory protective equipment (RPE) to protect against the residual fume. Outdoors, welding should be carried out using appropriate RPE.
  • Engineering controls should be selected based on the type of welding, the welding task, size of the welding piece, duration of welding.

Suitable engineering control methods are:

MIG Welding - On torch extraction (Preferred), Extraction arms/ downdraft benches or extracted booths

TIG - Extraction arms/ downdraft benches or extracted booths

MMA - Extraction arms/ downdraft benches or extracted booths

We also understand that more guidance will be forthcoming from the HSE in the coming weeks.

Our team is available to discuss the most efficient and effective ways to help ensure our customers workplace is compliant with the changes, and to ensure they are utilising the safest and most efficient equipment available.

BREXIT - How we will react

It is of course impossible to ignore the very real dilemma faced not only by parliament but families, communities and businesses up and down the country and that dilemma concerns the difficult and divisive nature of the choices surrounding Brexit.

It is not our job to second guess what the actual outcome of Brexit may be but to limit the chances of our customers encountering delays in sourcing products from us due to potential delays in the free movement of goods across borders.

Our goal over the coming months will be to ensure continuity of supply of all goods whether coming from inside or outside the EU. Currently quite a large percentage of goods are manufactured in China which one assumes will not be affected by Brexit, however for those goods manufactured within the EU we will take steps where appropriate to increase our level of stock.

Currently we hold over £650,000.00 of stock, plans are in place to increase this figure in line with projected demand and discussions are on-going with suppliers. We have had assurances that our supply lines are robust and well resourced.

Take heart, we are confident the lights will not be going out!

Happy New Year!

A warm welcome to both new and existing customers from all at Wellington Welding Supplies for 2019

It looks like it will be a challenging year for all in business as we grapple with the opportunities presented by Brexit. We can however report a very strong start to the year with a large order for 14 Kemppi MMA sets for an international site and a new Swiftcut table for a local Devon based company. So possibly our strongest start yet to a New Year.

We will aim to grow our business as we have done for the last 50 plus years by offering genuine products at realistic prices, it’s not a magic formula, anyone can adopt it and I believe the best retailers do this.

We enjoy the support of some of the best manufacturers in the welding industry including Esab, Kemppi, Miller, Binzel, Fronius and Hypertherm and we will continue to invest in these companies and our own staff through training and product support.

Our goal will be to continue to offer good advice and service to all customers and we wish you a prosperous 2019.

Happy new year 2019

Improving Our Poole Depot

We are pleased to announce a series of improvements to our Poole premises. These include a complete maintenance schedule applying to both internal and external aspects of the depot, customers should notice a cleaner fresher look to all public areas as a well as an improvement to the external appearance.Poole Depot

In addition we will be embarking on significant investment in improving the current BOC cylinder compound to reflect the increasing demand. The size of the compound will be increased by 50% which will allow for increased storage capacity plus facilitating handling of cylinders both in and out.
In tandem with this a new delivery vehicle is being purchased for the Poole depot which will incorporate a tail lift for loading and unloading cylinders at customer’s premises. This replaces the old winch system and should speed up the whole delivery process.

The improvements to the Poole premises are scheduled to be completed by early December 2017, the cylinder compound works should be completed by the end of January 2018 and the new delivery vehicle by the end of February 2018.

We hope that this continued investment into our Poole depot ensures they remain at the forefront of welding distribution in the Dorset area and continue to offer the best possible service for welding equipment, consumables and gas. If you have any comments on the above information I am sure our Poole manager Richard Etches would be delighted to hear from you, he can be contacted on 01202 685376 or e-mail him at poole@wellyweld.co.uk or alternatively use our Feedback form here on our web site.
